5 Proven Steps How To Make Money As A Clickbank Affiliate

Last Updated on September 24, 2020 by Zac Phua

Unless you are new to affiliate marketing, I am sure you have heard of the affiliate network named “Clickbank” from time to time.

That might make you wonder how to make money as a Clickbank affiliate. Or, perhaps you don’t even know what on earth is Clickbank all about.

Hey, this is Zac from Wise Solopreneur Hub. No matter what reason brings you here, I must thank you for clicking into this page and reading my article.

Today, you will learn the nitty-gritty of Clickbank – one of the most prominent affiliate networks, and how you can leverage this platform to build a long-term affiliate business.

Without further ado, let’s get right into it!

Affiliate Disclaimer: This article includes my affiliate links, which may provide a small commission to me if you purchase through those links (at no extra cost to you!). I recommend them to you because they’re companies that I’ve found helpful and trustworthy. You can read my full affiliate disclaimer here.

What Is Clickbank & How Does It Work?

For the sake of people who aren’t familiar with Clickbank, this section will let you fully understand what it actually is and how does it work.

If you’re already familiar with this platform, you can scroll down to the “How To Make Money As A Clickbank Affiliate” section to get the proven strategy to make some serious dough with Clickbank affiliate marketing.

What Is Clickbank?

Tim and Eileen Barber found Clickbank in 1998.

It’s a leading affiliate network that bridges the gap between digital product vendors and affiliate marketers worldwide.

To date, they have over 4,000 digital products in different niches listed on the marketplace. The niches are encompassed health & fitness, online business, travel, self-help, etc.

Meanwhile, they have reached over 200 million customers around the globe and claims to have helped more than 1000 affiliates become millionaires over the past 2 decades.

How Does Clickbank Work?

You already know that Clickbank is an affiliate network with a vast library of digital products, and they act as a middleman between the vendors and affiliates.

That said, there are 2 main ways to make money with Clickbank, viz:

  • Be the seller: Create your own digital products and market them on Clickbank.
  • Be an affiliate: Promote the trusty products and earn hefty commissions from each sale.
How Clickbank works
How Clickbank works

Obviously, this article will focus on the second approach because not everyone is interested in creating digital products as that requires a lot of works and some technical knowledge.

As an affiliate, all you have to take care of is getting people to buy through your affiliate links.

Why Choose Clickbank As A Jump-Off Point?

Reason #1: High + Recurring Commission

Often digital products have a higher commission rate compared to physical products.

In fact, many Clickbank affiliate programs offer over 50% commissions!

Quite a few of them offer recurring commissions, which means you will get paid with big bucks regularly, as long as your referrals subscripted to the affiliate product.

Reason #2: A Wide Range of Products

As I said, Clickbank has thousands of digital products available in their marketplace. With so many niches covered, you are more likely to find a suitable affiliate product for your targeted audiences.

Reason #3: Easy To Apply

Many affiliate networks have insane requirements in the screening process. Some of them even require your website to generate a fair amount of traffic if you want to get approved.

Well, how can you expect a newcomer to begin the venture when they aren’t even allowed to promote any products? That doesn’t make any sense.

As opposed to these affiliate networks, Clickbank’s entry barrier is relatively low. All they need are your basic information (email, first name, etc.) to sign up, and you can start marketing as many products as you’d like right away.

While one of Clickbank’s advantages is that it’s easy to get started, this is also their significant downside.

Because of their low entry barrier, everyone can be their sellers and affiliates, making Clickbank also known for the poor quality, and sometimes scammy looking products that seem like total trash.

But no worries, I will show you how to find the real gems inside Clickbank, so that you can avoid those low-end products and retent customer trusts in you.

Tried-And-True Strategy: How To Make Money As An Clickbank Affiliate

Step #1: Pick A Niche That You Know Based On Profitability

Your niche will determine the products you are going to promote, and the products will represent your brand.

So the first step to start your own long-term affiliate business is to pick a niche that you know based on its profitability, and passion always comes second.

If you have no idea what the niche is all about, you will never understand your audience’s core pains and how you can solve their problem with the right affiliate offer.

Besides, I kinda disagree when people say you should choose a niche based on your passion because, in the end, passion doesn’t create money. Money and skill mastery are the ones that create passion.

Just imagine you have hustle for a year from now, but still don’t get to see any decent result. How would you feel? To me, I will be 100% burn out.

Step #2: Looking For The Trusty Products

As I mentioned earlier, Clickbank has a lot of crappy and overhyped products. Thus, conducting careful product research is a MUST in order to prevent yourself from promoting such shitty products.

Even if your affiliate vendor offers you 80% commission, you won’t be able to build a well-established business if their product doesn’t appear trustworthy.

With all these in mind, let’s delve into the product research that could help you find the real gem.

Product Research Step 1: Familiarize Yourself With Clickbank

If you are new to Clickbank, you might be confused by the terms used in Clickbank marketplace.

It’s important to understand what these terms refer to, as some of them are the key metrics that help you sort through the rubbish offers.

ClickBank Marketplace Stats
ClickBank Marketplace Stats
  • Initial $/sale ➜ Initial Dollar Per Sale

The average commission amount that you can earn for each sale of a ClickBank product. Please note, this number Does NOT include recurring commission amount.

  • Avg $/sale ➜ Average Dollar Per Sale

This is the average commission you can earn for a particular Clickbank offer, including the initial and recurring commissions.

  • Avg %/sale ➜ Average Percent Sale

This number shows the average commission percentage you earn as an affiliate for a product, including initial commissions, rebills, and any upsell purchases.

  • Avg Rebill Total ➜ Average Rebill Total

This number shows the average recurring commission you can earn from a subscription-oriented product, which means you will get paid for a commission regularly without extra marketing effort, as long as your referral uses the product.

  • Avg %/rebill ➜ Average Rebill Percentage

The average recurring commission rate you can earn each time your referral renews their membership.

  • Grav ➜ Gravity

It refers to the ClickBank’s unique calculation, which gives you an idea of how well the sales of a particular product in the past 12 weeks.

In other words, the higher the gravity score of a product, the more sales it gets in the past 12 weeks. And hence, many affiliates have been benefited from it.

Although a high gravity means the product is “hot” at the moment, it also indicates that there will be a lot of competition in promoting this product.

  • Cat ➜ Category

This is the ClickBank Marketplace category and subcategory of the product.

Product Research Step 2: Good Product Criteria

A good Clickbank product must fit the following criteria:

  • Avg $/sale of $20 or higher: Promoting a product with low commission doesn’t worth your time and money.
  • Gravity score between 20 to 60: Products between this gravity score tend to perform well while having low competition.
  • Provide recurring commission: Simple. Promoting a product that offers recurring commissions is a great way to build a passive income stream.
  • Must have an affiliate tools page: This is optional, but it would be a plus if the affiliate vendor does provide promotional material like images, ad copy, email swipes, etc. These would save you lots of time brainstorming the marketing angles as you can just copy the provided materials or model them into something better.
  • Not finance-related products: From my experiences, products that are tied finances industry such as cryptocurrency, stock, Forex, etc. They tend to have higher refund rates. It would be best if you avoid them.

Side note: You can first sort the products with gravity and then use the widgets placed on the left sidebar to filter the products that fit the criteria mentioned above.

Product Research Step 3: Research Product’s Sales Page

A sales page is a standalone webpage where your audience first “lands” after they click on your affiliate link.

This is the place that determines the first impression of the audience toward your affiliate product. That’s why it’s so crucial.

You only have a few seconds to catch the audience’s attention, but if the sales page sucks, it will never convert well, no matter how great the product is.

Ideally, you would need to choose a product with a great-looking sales page with video + ad copy or just ad copyAvoid the sales page that only includes video because of 2 simple reasons:

  1. Your audience never expects they need to watch a long sales video before they can get on to the next step. Some of them might prefer reading text, too.
  2. People are simply impatient today. Most people will leave the page after a minute or two, and this will hurt your conversion.

Product Research Step 4: Check Customer Reviews

After you have found some potential products, it’s time to double confirm the product quality by checking its customer reviews. You never want to promote a product that ends up being an overhyped gimmick!

When you are checking the reviews, avoid the product reviews from other bloggers because their reviews aren’t authentic in most cases. They will either be full of praise (the product’s affiliate) or full of hatred (the competitors’ affiliate).

Some of them might not even try the product themselves. They just wrote the review for the big commission!

Instead, you should pay close attention to Reddit and Quora because these are the platforms where most customers express their real feelings after using the product.

Step #3: Choose A Channel To Deliver Values

Now, you already know what niche you want to get into, and you might also found some cool products that you can offer to your targeted audiences.

The next step you should take is choosing a channel that you can create and publish your content.

In my opinion, blogging and YouTube are the 2 ways that could reap the maximum benefits from Clickbank affiliate marketing.

In today’s world, people are immune to the marketing pitch that tries to sell them something.

If you want to get sales, you have to build trust, and in order to build trust, you have to offer something valuable first.

This is the main reason why many digital marketing YouTubers could make millions from their online courses simply because they have earned their subscribers’ trusts with their valuable free videos.

If you have a low startup budget while you are introverted and shy at the same time, blogging might be a better approach for you.

This is because YouTube often needs you to show your face in front of the camera for better credibility. And you will need to make a hefty investment in high-spec equipment like a camera, microphone, and video editing software.

You don’t have to be an excellent writer to get started with blogging. In fact, English is not my mother tongue language, let alone writing blog posts in English.

But I’m self-aware that I am even worst at videos, and I don’t have much startup capital, too. So blogging is my only choice.

How do I get better? The answer: Just get started and learn by doing.

Just like Zig Ziglar once said:

You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.

Step #4: Create A Lead Funnel

“The Money Is In The List!”

You may have already heard of this phrase before. It’s a buzzword in the internet marketing space.

If you haven’t, the phrase means you can make tons of money from an email list.

Building an email list is non-negotiable when it comes to building an affiliate marketing business.

Think about this way.

As an affiliate, you are just a middleman between the vendor and potential buyers.

Suppose you aren’t collecting emails from the audiences that you direct to the vendor’s site. In that case, you are losing the opportunity to follow up with them or remarket them to other related products in the future. Simply put, you are giving up future sales.

“How do I start collecting emails then?” You might ask.

Well, you need a lead funnel to capture the leads (i.e. emails, first name, etc.), and it’s consist of 4 essential elements, viz:

  • Lead Magnet
  • Squeeze Page
  • Email Sequence
  • Regular Broadcasting

Allow me to explain each element.

Lead Magnet

A lead magnet is a free offer that gives away to people in exchange for their contact details.

It could be an ebook, a coupon, a video tutorial, or anything that your audience finds enticing, relevant, and worth giving you their email address for.

Squeeze Page

The squeeze page is also frequently known as an opt-in page/landing page. This is where you convince people to provide their contact details in exchange for your lead magnet (free offer).

It usually looks something like this:

Squeeze Page
Squeeze Page

You can build a free squeeze page with an email servicer provider like Convertkit as they have many pre-built templates for you to customize.

Here’s a video showing you how to quickly create a simple squeeze page and integrate with your WordPress website without any coding experience:

Email Sequence & Regular Broadcasting

An email sequence a series of automated emails sent to people right after they joined your list. Again, this can be easily created with Convertkit.

Generally speaking, the first email is usually a welcome email to thanks them for joining your list and give them their requested free offer. And the rest of the emails is up to your choice what angle you’ll go for.

In my case, I will not promote them something yet, but direct them to my top blog posts and continue providing them values to nurture a good relationship.

After they have been through your email sequence, they will be automatically added to your regular broadcasting list, where you will send them email newsletters on a timely basis.

Once you have developed a rapport with your email subscribers, you can make an offer once in a while.

Step #5: Create SEO-Optimized Content To Drive Traffic

After everything is set in place, the time has come to getting traffic to your content. And then direct them to your squeeze page with a pop-up or inline form.

If you aren’t familiar with paid promotion, I suggest using search engine optimization (SEO) to drive traffic as running profitable ad campaigns require a good amount of knowledge. Or else, you are flushing your money down Google’s toilet.

SEO is the best practice to drive free organic traffic by getting your content the first-page rankings on the search engines.

A well-known digital marketing expert – Neil Patel, has a free thorough course that guides you to “SEOing” your website for better ranking from scratch.

I highly recommend you take the course, as it’s totally free, so there’s nothing for you to lose.

Clickbank Affiliate Marketing FAQs

1) Is Clickbank a scam?

The short answer is no. Clickbank has been in the business for over 2 decades, and they won’t cheat you. When you make sales, you will get paid for the commission that you deserved.

However, not all product listed on their marketplace is worth promoting as many of them are poor in quality.

2) What are the ClickBank banned countries?

While I recommend you to start your affiliate marketing career with Clickbank, the bad news is that not every person worldwide will be approved to make money as a Clickbank affiliate.

For some reason, Clickbank has banned some countries, they included:

  • CUBA
  • IRAQ
  • CHAD
  • TOGO

If you are in a country mentioned above, I am sorry to tell you that you cannot create a Clickbank account.

3) Does Clickbank cost money?

For affiliates:

Starting as an affiliate of Clickbank is free.

However, there is a $2.50 pay period processing fee for every payment issued to affiliates.

You can lower your payment threshold (the amount of money that must be in your account before ClickBank sends a payment) to lower your total fees.

For vendors:

There is a one-time activation fee of $49.95 that must be paid when your product gets approved as a vendor.

If your product is not approved, you are not responsible for the fee.

4) Is it possible to make $10000 a month with Clickbank?

No matter what industry you are in, there will always have people who are crushing it and make a good amount of money, while the vast majority of people are struggling.

Affiliate marketing has not different here.

The harsh truth is that most Clickbank affiliate marketers are broke and don’t even make a penny simply because they get into this game with a wrong mindset and unrealistic expectations.

Let’s face it. Affiliate marketing is not a “magic button” program. It won’t make you rich in a short period of time.

Can it make you $10,000 a month? This answer is YES. But it highly depends on persistence and the right strategy that works for you.

Especially if you are completely new to this, spend countless hours learning the fundamentals, and going through the right trials and errors are non-negotiable.

I am telling you this, not because I want to discourage you, but I want to put this upfront to set your expectation right so that you are ready to do whatever it takes to achieve affiliate marketing success.

When you master the skill, the sky is the limit. The most successful Clickbank affiliate marketers make six or seven figures a year.

5) Can I promote Clickbank products without a website?

Of course, you can. But it’s a terrible idea if you are serious about building an actual business that lasts long.

Building a website is like creating a home base for your affiliate marketing content, where people can come to your site to consume it. This gives you better credibility because you are providing them values.

As I said, when you earned people trusts, they are more likely to buy your recommended affiliate products. It’s way better than spamming your links everywhere across the internet.

6) How do I get paid from ClickBank?

ClickBank does not payout via PayPal. Payments are only issued via the following methods.

  • Check
  • Direct Deposit
  • Wire Transfer
  • Payoneer

For more information about how ClickBank issues the payment with these methods, CLICK HERE

7) Is there any recommended affiliate marketing course?

ClickBank University 2.0 is a premium training created by successful ClickBank vendors and affiliates, teaching you how to utilize the platform to build a fortune.

However, after I checked all the customer feedbacks on Quora, I found that the reputation of the course is not that promising.

Many people complain that the course turns out to be a poor quality program with many upsells. They also complain that it’s more difficult for you to follow the core training if you don’t buy those upsells.

I won’t recommend any product that I never tried. Plus, I don’t think it’s a great training worth your money with all these negative reviews in mind.

Instead, I recommend you check out Wealthy Affiliate – it’s an online community where I hone the high-income skill (affiliate marketing).

With Wealthy Affiliate, you will get all the needed support, tool, and resource to start a thriving affiliate marketing business.

In fact, SiteRubix (the web builder software that I showed you in the earlier section) is developed by Wealthy Affiliate.

I highly recommend you give Wealthy Affiliate a try. Rest assured, it’s free to join. You can always upgrade to premium membership (only $49/month) later if you found it helpful. I hope this piece of info helps.
